Infamous: Second Son Review (PS4)

On the 21st of March, Sony Computer Entertainment of America released its newest flagship title, Infamous: Second Son, to the Playstation 4. How does the newest installment into the long running Infamous series stack up to its 2 Playstation 3 predecessors? Will it be able to achieve the same commercial and critical success as its predecessors? Find out below.

The first thing that I noticed about this game was its graphics. While a few of the next gen games that have been released contained quality graphics, I've seen none like these. While watching cutscenes, the difference between these and an actual movie are barely visible, and actual gameplay is no different. The vibrant, neon signs that dot the city of Seattle, where the game takes place, give off the appearance of a real city, and each and every face you pass has a tremendous amount of detail, sometimes even looking more realistic than our main character Delsin, whose beanie alone contains 7,500 polygons. Literally, that's like more detail than in my entire life.

Speaking of, our hero (or villan, depending on how you play the game) Delsin is an intricately weaved character, and rather than Infamous's previous hero Cole, otherwise known as Mr. Personality, has charm, tons of humor, and, a personality, and doesn't give off the cold vibe we got from Cole in both previous installments, a nice change for the series. Delsin has an affinity for art, namely, graffiti, often using it as a symbol of rebellion against the D.U.P., the main enemy of the game, an organization attempting to contain all known conduits, including Delsin. Delsin's cocky, brave attitude often leads to harmless skirmishes with his brother Reggie, a police officer who accompanies Delsin on his journey to combat the D.U.P., which adds a fun, light side to the narrative. Once again, something we missed in Infamous 1 and 2.

The plot of this game is similar to past iterations of the series, our main character, a conduit, up against a large army set on taking him out at all costs, even if it means wreaking havoc upon the town they're meant to protect. While we arrived at the main plot point in a different way than other installments in the series, the overall story of the game starts out in a very familiar fashion. However, as Delsin continues to explore Seattle, the main setting of Second Son, the story starts to unravel, showing us rich detail, and an intricate story that while, is solid, is just, good, and isn't the main selling point of the game. However, the gameplay, is something worth looking into.

Second Son features gameplay similar to that of 1 and 2, at least, control wise. However, as opposed to the electricity powers our previous hero Cole controlled, Delsin controls fire and smoke, however, many of the attacks are incredibly similar, and the smoke almost acts as just a skin change, with the usage and effects of the attacks being overall very similar. Delsin also shares another similarity with Cole power-wise, being that Delsin must find smoke sources and recharge his powers in a manner similar to Cole. However, while Cole's recharge stations were readily available in numerous places around the city, Delsin's are sparsely found throughout the city, however, each one restores his entire power bar, rather than finding multiple sources to recharge only parts of the bar.

Another difference between gameplay of the titles are the new powers Delsin is able to obtain. Without spoiling the story, Delsin is able to acquire neon and video powers, which, while sound, strange to say the least, are very formidable, and add an new level of diversity and well, fun, to the tried and true gameplay.

And as always, choices that effect how the town looks upon you return once again, with even small details such as how you attack your opponents can change how the town looks upon you in the blink of an eye.

Another thing about this game that attracted me was its attention to detail. While in the previous installments the militia would fire upon you at first sight, in Second Son, if you act like a normal person, you can easily slip through the crowd undetected, adding a more realistic, lifelike element to the narrative. Other small details like that are found throughout the game, making for a more immersive, lifelike experience.

Overall, I really enjoyed this title. The stellar gameplay is similar, and familiar enough to earlier installments of the series to catch onto easily, but also provides a new, fun, take on the formula. Featuring a solid, yet definitely not perfect narrative, diverse, unique, and intricate characters, great gameplay, and an overall charm present though out the game, this is a title I definitely suggest everyone to take a look at. What did you think of the game? Make sure to tell me below, and I'll see you guys next time!

The new SimCity 2013 Review!

So some of you may not be aware (considering there was literally no advertising at all) that the new SimCity just came out! I never played much of the earlier SimCitys, but I'm glad I picked up this one! the realtime strategy system of this game works great, however, sometimes I feel it lags behind what I do. The game will always give you tips of what zones you need (commercial, residential, or industrial), and say the game tells me I should probably put in more industrial zones, after I do, it takes a few minutes to realize I did put in more industrial and change its tip. A slight annoyance, but not too bad. The game has what are called regions. Regions are basically like states, as they contain the cities you make. There are about 10 different regions you can choose from, and I'm guessing there will eventually be more as DLC. Disappointingly, you cannot make your own regions, just choose from the templates and rename them. All the cities within the regions are connected, such as one city sending their trash collectors over to another city, allowing the receiving city to not have to buy their own trash collecting service, and in return, they pay the city who sent their services over. Its not just trash services though, most services in the game can be sent to another city. Workers can also commute to other cities for work, and if you have good tourist attractions, Sims from other cities will visit your city, making even more profit. SimCity did a great job with the multiplayer aspect of this game. You can make a private region, where you own all the cities in it or invite your friends to make a town in that region, or you can make a public region anyone can join! I feel with each new game in a series (whether it be Sims, or SimCity) EA does a great job at making it more realistic. Citizens will even protest at town hall when there's a serious issue! So in conclusion, I'd definitely suggest buying the new SimCity.

*tip* Don't grow your city too fast! I grew one city so fast, that I realized with 14 people dying per day, 7 buildings burning down a day, and half of (all 2) of my schools without power, that it was time to get rid of this town, lol.

Console Wars, Which is right for you?

So recently in my computers class, I had to make a website, and I made mine about video game consoles, and which was the best.  So I figured I'd post that here, minus all the fancy formatting. Enjoy!

Xbox 360
The Xbox 360 is only Microsoft’s second entry into the gaming industry, yet it is not to be taken lightly.  This console came out a year before its main rival, the PS3, in 2005, and was far ahead of its time.  Although it has about the same capabilities as the PS3, there is one major difference between the two.  While PSN (Playstation Network) allows you to play online capable games for free and has paid subscriptions that offer you many benefits such as free games (PS Plus), Xbox Live (The Xbox Network) requires that you pay for online play, but at the same time offers more stable servers than PSN, thus making disconnecting from a game far less likely.  So are the few benefits of paying a fee to pay online worth it?  In my opinion, no. But that is for the consumer to decide.
Wii U
The Wii U is Nintendo’s current home console, and was the 1sthome console released in the 8th generation of consoles. Nintendo captured consumer gold with the Wii, targeting the casual gamer.  With this, they were able to amass a huge amount of sales, with over 90 million units sold, and still counting. However, with the Wii U, Nintendo is not finding the same success.  While the Wii U is far ahead of the Wii (In technical capabilities), sales have not been on par.  Nintendo has been constantly lowering their expected sales for the end of March, seeing how the console is suffering.  The console’s weekly sales have dipped to as low as 57,000, and some weeks the Wii has been close to outselling the newer console!  With less and less consumer interest being shown in the console, it is unknown if Nintendo will be able to recover from the spiraling downward sales.
PS3
The PS3 is Sony’s representative for the 7th generation of consoles.  Being released in 2006, this console was leaps and bounds ahead predecessor, the PS2.  The consumer market realized this.  Within 24 hours the console had sold 81,639 units, In Japan alone.  Even being released a whole year after its main competitor, the Xbox 360, this console has proved itself to be the best console on the market, as it has matched the 360 in sales, and is on its way to passing it.  With free online capabilities, a large amount of console exclusives, and having a sleuth of apps like Netflix, why shouldn’t this be considered the best console of this generation?
PS4
Not much is known about this extremely new console.  With the PS4 only being announced February 20th, the console itself hasn’t even been seen.  However, we do know some info.  Info such as at least 4 new exclusive titles currently being developed, that every one of Sony’s studios is working on a PS4 title, that this is an extremely powerful system (matching the strength of a supercomputer) with 8 gigabytes of ram, and that the all new, redesigned controller (as seen above) has a new share button (allowing you to livestream your gameplay) 2 touchpads, and a PS Move sensor on its top.  From what we’ve seen so far, this is likely going to be the most powerful 8thgeneration console.
So Which is right for you?
We know that each of these consoles are finely made, and that none of these consoles offer a bad experience.  However, each console offers a different experience, some you could say, that are better than others.  So, which is right for you?  Nintendo may not be as focused on the casual gamer as it was the last time around, but they still haven’t totally moved away from that.  Nintendo’s consoles are never going to have those 1st and 3rd person shooters you’re going to be looking for on their consoles, however they have a wide range of exclusive titles such as Mario & Zelda that any gamer will enjoy.  However, if you’re a hardcore gamer, you will most likely want to rule the Wii U out.  The PS3 and Xbox 360 are extremely similar, and each offers a great experience to the hardcore gamer, and to a lesser extent, the casual gamer as well.  So then, it mainly comes down to online gaming.  Would you rather join PSN, which allows you to play online for free, with the option to join their subscription service PS Plus, which offers you a large library of games for free (a subscription that costs less than Xbox Live’s required fee), or join Xbox Live, that has more stable servers, and will almost always make sure you won’t disconnect from your game.  The choice is yours.

PS4 Announcment Review!

Hey everyone! So, you may or may not know, but on Wednesday the 20th, Sony had an announcement for the PS4. The event was great in my opinion. As ridiculously long as it was, it kept me hooked. It looks like most of the rumors were true. With a sleek, redesigned controller,

sharing videos and screenshots of your gameplay are as easy as a click of a button. Along with an amazing 8 gigabytes of memory, more specs were revealed for this supercomputer like console. From the supposed leaked specs from the Xbox 720, this definitely seems to be the more powerful console. Along with releasing info about the hardware, they also released info about software. A new Infamous title,  a new IP for Media Molecule, a new Watchdogs, a new game named Knack , a new Killzone, and a new team racing game named Driveclub, and many more new games were all revealed at the event. I'd actually give the announcement event a solid 9/10, the only thing I disliked about it was the dragging on of it. Anyways, I look forward to the new console and games, and make sure to look out for it at the end of 2013!
